  ABOUT US 21. 02. 2005

DILIA, Theatrical, Literary and Audiovisual Agency, has been securing copyright to full satisfaction of the authors for 55 years.  In this domain DILIA is the longest established and biggest agency with immeasurable experience and very good relationships with similar agencies abroad.

Collective administration of copyright and associated author's rights is one of the main activities of the civic association. We execute the collective administration of copyright for several types of authors.

Agency provides via its departments the following services:

  • The Music Department hires music materials of stage works by the top Czech composers, such as Smetana, Dvořák, Martinů and many others. It represents many foreign publishers when supplying music scores to Czech users.
  • The Literary Department arranges licences for the foreign publishers to publish literary works by Czech writers, among them Bass, Boučková, Čapek, Fuks, Hrubín, Nezval, Pavel, Poláček, Seifert, Vančura or Lada´s illustrations.
  • The Theatre Department renders to foreign theatres licences to rights of Czech playwrights, for example Drda, Hubač, Voskovec, Werich and conversely negotiates with foreign agencies the terms for staging foreign authors at Czech theatres. Also provides services to authors and theatres; some of the help is aimed at foreign customers thereby offering our authors the possibility to their promotion outside the Czech territory. Alternatively, home users are informed about texts, books, offers and demands coming from abroad.
  • The Media Department secures licences to use of extracts from older famous Czech films like The Good Soldier Svejk, Proud Princess and to film screenplays based on works by such authors as Vančura, Čapek etc.
DILIA is a member of the international non-governmental organizations CISAC (www.cisac.org), GESAC (www.gesac.org) and IFRRO (www.ifrro.org).

5th Season of Readings of Czech Plays in New York 09. 06. 2006

It has become a tradition that with every Spring, a series of staged readings of Czech plays translated into English is performed at The Public Theatre in New York. This year’s edition includes Václav Havel’s Conspirators, Bikiny by debuting author Zuzana Jochmanová, and Theremin, the second script written by Petr Zelenka. Thanks to the continuous production efforts of the Czech Center New York and Immigrants’ Theater Project and the support of the Theatre Institute Prague, the reading series has reached its fifth season on New York stages. The Public has been its home for the third year in a row, which brings Czech drama back where Havel’s plays premiered in America thanks to the theater’s founder and maverick director Joe Papp. Over the past five years, the series has presented New York audiences with nineteen plays from established and new authors alike, including Pitínský’s The Girls’ Room, Topol’s Cat on the Tracks, Volánková’s 22 Anxiety Street, Pokorný’s Dad Scores, Bláhová’s Little Pitfall, Tobiáš’ Je SuiS, and Havel’s Largo Desolato. The introduction of Czech authors to American professional audiences is at the heart of the series. In addition, discussions with the director, cast, audience and the author (when present) that follows each reading is as important as the process of rehearsal and performance. The evenings oftentimes ended with a crescendo of opposing opinions.
